Winemaker Notes

The main aromas and flavors are of dark cherry, blumps and a bit of black licorice. The new oak barrels contribute a touch of vanilla, brown sugar, cocoa dust and toast.

COMMENTARY: The 2016 La Storia Merlot is packed and delicious. TASTING NOTES: This wine drinks so well. Enjoy its ripe fruit and black earth with a serving of a grilled ribeye. (Tasted: March 11, 2020, San Francisco, CA)

Trentadue Winery Image
The Trentadues were among the very first to plant new vines in Sonoma County since the days of Prohibition. Italians love their red wines, especially hearty reds like Carignane. In 1962, the Trentadue family began planting new Carignane vines in addition to the 68 acres of old vines already growing on their ranch. Now more than 35 years old, these vines are among the oldest producing Carignane vineyards in America. The family remains steadfastly devoted to this grape, and their wine ranks indisputably among just a handful of top ranked California Carignane.

Alexander Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

View all products

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.
