Trapiche Malbec Vina Victorio Coletto 2004 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

This vineyard was founded in 1939 by Victorio Coletto. When he planted his vineyard, Victorio was a pioneer in one of Mendoza's most prized areas: El Peral. Now 83, Victorio has been selling fruit to Trapiche for many years, and his grapes have always been prized for their sweetness and high quality. When asked why he decided to plant Malbec, Don Victorio answered simply, "Because I like red wine!"

At 1130 meters elevation, the vineyard has vines that average 50 years old growing in soils that are alluvial, loamy clay, about 1.5 meters deep. The fruit is hand harvested into 20 kg. plastic bins for protection during transport to the winery. There's bunch selection and destemming prior to a rigorous berry selection. Fermentation and maceration occurs in small concrete vats for a minimum of 25 days at 23-25°C. Natural malolactic fermentation precedes 18 months of aging in new French oak barrels.

"Garnet hue with a fuchsia rim. Lush blueberry aromas with uplifting accents of caramel, coconut and maple. Layers of blueberry and ripe plum flavors with well-integrated tannins and acids. Lengthy finish with a tasty mix of sweet oak, smoky fruit and minerals."

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
