Winemaker Notes

With a deep garnet-red color, the wine shows aromas of plum, cherry, tobacco, chocolate and coffee. On the palate, a subtle start precedes a full character on the mid-palate, then the wine becomes powerful. The red fruit, mocha and creme brulée notes are prominent, with a very elegant, long finish, and ripe, powerful tannins.

Food Match: venison, roasts, red meat, grilled meats, game, beef, BBQ.

RP 94
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2006’s were bottled in early April 2008, just a week before I tasted them. The 2006 Malbec Vina Federico de Villafane is opaque purple-colored with superb aromatic array of wood smoke, mineral, crushed stone, blackberry and licorice. One the palate this large-scaled wine is plush, dense, savory, and beautifully balanced.
WS 92
Wine Spectator
Dense, but creamy and approachable with lush fig, raspberry ganache and crushed boysenberry fruit flavors weaving through notes of mocha, melted licorice and graphite. The finish is long and rich. For the hedonist crowd.

Trapiche, South America
Trapiche Winery Video

Trapiche’s story began in 1883, in a small vineyard called ‘El Trapiche’ in Mendoza, at the foothills of the Andes Mountain range. With more than 135 years of experience, Trapiche has earned its place as the pioneering Argentinean winery, owning more than 3000 acres of vineyards ranging from 600 meters to over 1200 meters.

Exploration and discovery lie at the heart of the winery, which thrives on innovation as a guiding principle in the search for new horizons. True to its origins, today Trapiche is on a continuous quest for the latest best practices and product innovations, such as being the first to produce wine on Argentina’s east coast by the Atlantic Ocean.

Trapiche has been recognized five times in the ranking of “The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands”, and in 2019 was recognized by Wine Enthusiast as “New World Winery of the Year”. This award marks an important milestone in Trapiche´s history, recognizing its contributions to the Argentine and global wine industries over the past 135 years, and its impact on local wine tourism and culture in recent decades.

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
