Winemaker Notes

5 Blocks is a fan favorite at Terry Hoage. Syrah leads the blend with its classically dark color, big mouth feel, and savory notes of beef and bacon fat. The Syrah is blended with carefully chosen amounts of Mourvedre, Grenache, and Cinsault, each adding their own unique character. Our 5 Blocks cuvee is generally bigger than the Pick (also a GSM), but can be more feminine in certain years. It always shows beautifully in its youth and is one of the most interesting, balanced, and complex blends that we produce.

Professional Ratings

  • 92
The 2007 5 Blocks is composed of 62% Syrah, 19% Grenache, 13% Mourvedre, and 6% Cinsault. It reveals a more earthy, smoky, gamy nose that leads to Asian spices and jus de viande as well as abundant black currant and black cherry fruit.

Terry Hoage, California
Focusing solely on Rhone-style wines, Terry Hoage Vineyards is a 100% organically-farmed estate in the acclaimed Westside of Paso Robles, California. Just off Highway 46, the special climate and unique terroir of Terry Hoage Vineyards produces exceptional fruit that is forward and focused. Their unique approach to winemaking and sustainable practices has Robert Parker saying: "This is the kind of wine the Central Coast should be producing more."

The wines are created using a minimalist philosophy. Using 100% French oak, the Hoages craft their wines without racking, fining or filtering. The only time the wines are moved is during the bottling process. With extremely minimal processing, the wines deliver intense fruit flavors and showcase Terry Hoage Vineyard's dedication to winemaking.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.

Paso Robles Wine

Central Coast, California

Paso Robles has made a name for itself as a source of supple, powerful, fruit-driven Central Coast wines. But with eleven smaller sub-AVAs, there is actually quite a bit of diversity to be found in this inland portion of California’s Central Coast.

Just east over the Santa Lucia Mountains from the chilly Pacific Ocean, lie the coolest in the region: Adelaida, Templeton Gap and (Paso Robles) Willow Creek Districts, as well as York Mountain AVA and Santa Margarita Ranch. These all experience more ocean fog, wind and precipitation compared to the rest of the Paso sub-appellations. The San Miguel, (Paso Robles) Estrella, (Paso Robles) Geneso, (Paso Robles) Highlands, El Pomar and Creston Districts, along with San Juan Creek, are the hotter, more western appellations of the greater Paso Robles AVA.

This is mostly red wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel standing out as the star performers. Other popular varieties include Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache and Rhône blends, both red and white. There is a fairly uniform tendency here towards wines that are unapologetically bold and opulently fruit-driven, albeit with a surprising amount of acidity thanks to the region’s chilly nighttime temperatures.
