Winemaker Notes

Ruby red color with garnet highlights. Ample and highly complex flavors at the nose develop then to mineral notes of graphite, fruity tones of red berries and spicy aromas of clove and vanilla. Long and balanced at the palate, smooth and persistent notes bring to to the elegant end characterized by present and velvety tannins.

WS 95
Wine Spectator
Supple, laced with cherry, strawberry, floral and graphite flavors, this is elegant and harmonious, with a solid base of tannins for support. Still needs time to resolve itself, yet finds a nice balance in the end. Best from 2021 through 2036.

Tasting Panel
Fragrant and soft nose; silky and complex with racy acidity, notes of fresh raspberry, and an elegant style. A long and charming demonstration of why Brunello is one of the world’s great wines.

James Suckling
A subtle and refined Brunello on the nose with flower and raspberry character. Medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long and caressing finish. All in finesse and beauty. Drink now.
V 93
Dark bright ruby-red. Black plums, chocolate, underbrush and tobacco on the intense nose. Then deep and very dense; a rich core of dark fruit is camouflaged by a strong tannic spine and repeating concentrated notes of dark chocolate. Finishes long, but with mounting, slightly tough tannins. This is a huge, massive wine that needs to develop a little more grace and refinement to become truly stellar. Forget about it in the cellar for the next eight years or so and see if it smoothens out. The 2012 Brunello Poggio Doria was spectacular, so this wine hopefully has the stuffing to digest all the oak it comes equipped with.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
With only 3,000 bottles produced, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigneto Poggio Doria is the top-shelf expression presented by the historic Tenute Silvio Nardi estate. This is a darkly concentrated and elaborate wine that displays some of the extra color and fleshiness that comes courtesy of the warmer growing conditions and dry summer of 2012. The aromas are broad, flat and powerful. More than nuanced complexity, the wine delivers a confident and direct dose of flavor intensity that is lasting and long.

Poggio Doria is a 5ha plot at Nardi's Casale del Bosco estate in the northwest of Montalcino. It's a massal selection, from which they selected five clones to plant throughout the rest of their vineyards. Initially quite closed, this has nuances of clove and violets complementing red plum and vanilla. The thick, grippy tannins are broad rather than elegant, and need to find their footing. Only 3,500 bottles produced.

Tenute Silvio Nardi Winery Video

Tenute Silvio Nardi consists of 80 hectares of vineyards in an unspoiled part of central Tuscany: Montalcino, whose symbol is its great red wine, Brunello. Silvio Nardi founded the estate here at Casale del Bosco; since 1985 it has been run by his youngest daughter, Emilia.

Emilia Nardi knows she can depend on Casale's special and distinctive territory to produce a contemporary and elegant Brunello. She has invested single-mindedly in the vineyards in this harmonious natural setting - as any tasting of her fine wines will attest. Each of her signature wines expresses the differing character of Sangiovese when it is grown at Montalcino.

The estate's vineyards are situated between 140 and 420 meters above sea level: some extend north-west of Montalcino on the hills around Casale del Bosco, while others are located to the north of it at Tenuta di Bibbiano and to the south-east at Manachiara, where the precious cru of the same name originates.

Famous for its bold, layered and long-lived red, Brunello di Montalcino, the town of Montalcino is about 70 miles south of Florence, and has a warmer and drier climate than that of its neighbor, Chianti. The Sangiovese grape is king here, as it is in Chianti, but Montalcino has its own clone called Brunello.

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. From the valleys, where deeper deposits of clay are found, come wines typically bolder, more concentrated and rich in opulent black fruit. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas; these sites reach up to over 1,600 feet and have shallow soils of rocks and shale.

Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before realease and once released, typically needs more time in bottle for its drinking potential to be fully reached. The good news is that Montalcino makes a “baby brother” version. The wines called Rosso di Montalcino are often made from younger vines, aged for about a year before release, offer extraordinary values and are ready to drink young.
