Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This wine is all about what makes our Deux Chevaux Vineyard Chardonnay so special. This wine delivers a very rich nose that mixes honeydew melon, ripe pineapple, honey, sweet oak and butterscotch. It possesses a classic Napa Valley barrel-fermented Chardonnay mouth that is rich and unctuous. The flavor profile delivers honeydew and pineapple, with added hints of vanilla custard, orange marmalade, floral notes and roasted chestnut. The wine has a strong finish of butterscotch due to malolactic fermentation.

Creamy-textured, with jazzy, smoky, toasty oak and a core of white peach and honeydew flavors. This is elegant, graceful, long, full and complete. Ends with a toasted marshmallow edge.
  • 90
An oily, rich and full-figured white from the producer's estate vineyard, this wine offers elements of honey-baked apple and caramel. Well made in a big style, it's listed as 100% from the Dijon clone of Chardonnay.

Vintner Barry Waitte founded Tamber Bey Vineyards in 1999, when he purchased a 60-acre vineyard in the Yountville Appellation and an 11-acre property in the renowned Oakville Appellation. This marked Waitte’s entry into the wine business as a grower. He immediately hired vineyard manager Josh Clark to plant and farm the properties with the goal of growing premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Dijon Chardonnay.

A visit to the Tamber Bey winery is like nothing else in Napa Valley. The winery is located at the Sundance Ranch in Calistoga, a world-class, 22-acre equestrian facility that is dedicated to training top performance horses. The winery was built in 2013 by remodeling a 15,000-square-foot covered riding arena into a state-of-the-art winemaking facility with a crush pad that houses 36 fermentation tanks sized for individual vineyard-designated wines.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

One of Napa Valley's most historic sub-appellations, Yountville spreads through some of the valley's ideal cooler sites and enjoys success with a handful of different and significant grape varieties.

Syrah competes strongly with Cabernet Sauvignon here for optimal vineyard real estate followed by Pinot noir, Pinot blanc and Sauvignon blanc.

This sub-AVA of Napa Valley is rich in the history that makes Napa Valley what it is today, and not just for red wines. Moët & Chandon entered the California winemaking business via Yountville in 1973 with the establishment Domaine Chandon. Their goal has always been to produce top quality méthode champenoise sparkling wines.

Christian Moueix, originally responsible for managing Chateau Petrus and La Fleur-Petrus in Pomerol, arrived in Yountville in the early 1980s. He formed a partnership with Rohin Lail and Marcia Smith, inheritors of Napanook vineyard from their father John Daniel of Inglenook in Rutherford. In 1995 Moueix became sole owner of Napanook and chose the name Dominus, which today produces some of Napa’s highest scoring, age-worthy Bordeaux Blends.
