Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Black fruit (mulberry, cassis and cherry) dominates the nose, which slowly opens to graphite, warm spice and cocoa nib. Mirroring the landscape surrounding the vineyard blocks, aromatic bay leaf and Madrone add further punctuation to the vivid fruit character in the wine. The palate is generous and supple on the entry, showing ripe dark fruit and an exuberant lift of blood orange and pomegranate, a nod to the freshness of the wine. The finish is laden with graphite, chalky tannins and the ever-persistent bay notes that ground this wine so firmly in the Alexander Valley. While those compelled to drink the 2012 Legacy now will no doubt enjoy it, a decade or two of cellaring will provide greater enjoyment in the future.

Professional Ratings

  • 95
The 2012 Proprietary Red Legacy, an 866-case blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, may turn out to be the finest Legacy ever made. It exhibits terrific intensity along with beautiful notes of plums, blackberries, blueberries, licorice, tobacco leaf and damp earth. Full-bodied, softer, with more velvety tannins than the other Cabernets, it is a plush, drinkable red to consume over the next 15-20 years.

Stonestreet, California
Stonestreet Proprietors Christopher and Ariel Jackson Winery Image

In the autumn of 1989, Jess Jackson acquired the Zellerbach winery and renamed it in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for their powerful reds and luscious whites.

Today, Stonestreet wines are undergoing a transformation, using fruit from Alexander Mountain Estate and new winemaking techniques. Alexander Mountain Estate, with lean, well-draining soils and cooler temperature, produces fruit with smaller berries and more intense color and flavor. Stonestreet is dedicated to fulfilling the promise of Alexander Valley's exceptional and distinctive vineyards. Traditional, Old World methods of hand harvesting, small barrel lot production, native yeast fermentation and bottling each wine unfiltered brings out the best in specific grape varieties and provides the quality framework for each Stonestreet wine.
