Winemaker Notes

The color is bright, clean, deep ruby color. On the nose it has depth, strength and density. The aromatic character is focused on red fruits – sour cherries, blueberries, red cherries – along with spice, aromatic herbs and a touch of minerality. On the palate it is medium to full bodied with interesting acidity and very high quality tannins, while aromas of red fruits, earth and metal together with tobacco and spices dominate. The aftertaste is long, complex with constant evolution.

Going back 10 years in time, the Domaine Skouras 2016 Nemea Grande Cuvée shows how gracefully Agiorgitiko can evolve in a warm vintage. The wine opens to aromas of redcurrant, sweet spice and dried herbs, while the palate reveals soft, plush fruit framed by elegant, chalky tannins. There is a generosity to the texture that reflects the growing season, yet the wine remains balanced and composed. Agiorgitiko is not naturally a grape of massive tannins or concentration, and the Skouras family deliberately avoids over-extraction in favor of finesse and drinkability. The result is a wine with sweet, polished tannins (almost Merlot-like in character) that maintains its charm.

Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of red grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent single varietal wines, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics, as well as aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal and Italy are known for having a multitude of unique varieties but they can really be found in any region.
