Winemaker Notes

The 2000 Malbec is medium deep ruby with a purple edge. The nose is reminiscent of dense blueberry pancakes with a light dusting of "Swiss Miss" chocolate powder. Aromatic touches of plums and prunes support with slight hints of tobacco and tar. Good complexity and depth with lots of "stuffing". Strong flavors of blueberry fruit are supported by dusty plum and hints of soy. Medium bodied with a soft velvety structure and lingering finish, this Malbec exhibits the forward fruit and structure that typifies this uniquely Argentine wine. In the winemakers' opinion this vintage is superior to the '99, with better ageing potential.

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
