    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Chardonnay from Weeks Vineyard is densely concentrated with screaming high acidity. The winemakers gave the wine the time to unfold and bottled it after 18 months in neutral French oak barrels. Very wound up in its youth, the extra elevage allowed the wine to reveal many layers. The wine is spicy wooly and nutty. Full of mineral, fresh hay and crisp yellow pear, it is concentrated and full of energy. The tight bright palate yields to a chewy textured finish. It should age very well for many years.

As with all good stories, this is really about a love affair. This unique winemaking collaboration is the result of Ryan and Mega Glaab's combined love for each other and the world of wines. The couple met in Australia working as seasonal cellar hands at Torbreck Winery. They quickly fell in love and have since been married. Between the two of them, they have worked at wineries such as Pax Wine Cellars, Peay Vineyards, Sine Qua Non, and Marcassin. Their wines for Ryme Cellars are produced at the Wind Gap winery, where Ryan is the Assistant Winemaker for Pax and Pam Mahle’s newest project.

Ryan and Megan started Ryme Cellars in 2007 with one ton of Aglianico. Excited by the intensity and complexity of this wine, they embarked on producing intriguing wines of varieties that they personally enjoy. To date they make two Vermentinos, Ribolla Gialla, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Aglianico under Ryme. In 2011, Ryan and Megan wanted to expand their production to include some great Sonoma County vineyards that produce the type of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that they love to drink. For this task, they created a new label called Verse Wines, as a compliment to the more esoteric Ryme portfolio. With Ryme & Verse, Ryan and Megan aspire to make honest and expressive wines that exhibit the characteristics of the variety and place from which it came.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A vast appellation covering Sonoma County’s Pacific coastline, the Sonoma Coast AVA runs all the way from the Mendocino County border, south to the San Pablo Bay. The region can actually be divided into two sections—the actual coastal vineyards, marked by marine soils, cool temperatures and saline ocean breezes—and the warmer, drier vineyards further inland, which are still heavily influenced by the Pacific but not quite with same intensity.

Contained within the appellation are the much smaller Fort Ross-Seaview and Petaluma Gap AVAs.

The Sonoma Coast is highly regarded for elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, increasingly, cool-climate Syrah. The wines have high acidity, moderate alcohol, firm tannin, and balanced ripeness.
