Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Rudd Samantha's Cabernet Sauvignon presents dense color, with a dark, purple hue suggesting its weight and vibrant acidity. On the nose it oers fresh, dark fruit- blackberries, cassis as well as the aromatics we have come to recognize from the Oakville Estate: the characteristic warm tobacco accompanied by a dry, almost ashy note of rosemary that speaks of the near perfect growing season. The finish leaves a subtle exotic note reminiscent of sandalwood. The ripe vintage is characterized by a warm, generous evolution balanced with mineral freshness. With a long persistence in mouth, the 2012 offers rich density, ripe tannins and balanced concentration.

Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec

Critical Acclaim

WS 92
Wine Spectator
A bold, assertive style that packs in a lot of flavor, with dense dark berry, mocha, mineral, cedar and loamy earth notes driving the core flavors. Though big and rowdy, there's a measure of finesse and suppleness here that moves to the forefront. Drink now through 2028.

Rudd Winery Image
Rudd winery was established in 1996, when Leslie Rudd purchased the 54-acre estate in Oakville. Since the purchase, Mr. Rudd has made extensive renovations to the property, to include a complete replanting of the vineyards to close-spaced, red Bordeaux varietals and the expansion and renovation of the winery, including custom-designed tanks and a gentle, gravity-flow system. In addition, 22,000 square feet of caves have been dug below the winery to provide ideal aging conditions. In April 2002, Charles Thomas joined the Rudd team as Director of Vineyards and Winemaking. Charles brings to Rudd over 25 years of winemaking and vineyard experience. Along with the proprietary red wine from Oakville, Rudd will continue to produce small quantities of Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley.

Oakville Wine

Napa Valley, California

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
