Winemaker Notes

Grapes for this Malbec are grown in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, then chilled and transported by ocean voyage to Caymus, where we use our winemaking techniques to create a style that is dense, dark and supple. Falling outside standard labeling rules, Red Schooner does not include a vintage date but is known by the voyage from which it traveled (i.e. Voyage 11 is the 2021 vintage). Strikingly smooth, with scents and flavors of dark fruit and fine, textural tannins.

Elegant and pure, with an inlay of savory, sage and peppery floral details, gaining richness and depth around a concentrated, juicy core of chocolate berry flavors. Reveals a twinge of fresh acidity that lifts the flavors, allowing them to spread out around fine tannins.

The Red Schooner Voyage 11 offers smooth sailing on the palate. This wine brings aromas and flavors of fragrant spices, attractive blackberries, and a hint of licorice to the fore. Pair it with Argentine-style grilled beef. (Tasted: August 7, 2024, San Francisco, CA)

Most distinguished and celebrated from Argentina’s Mendoza, Malbec has seen runaway success since the early 2000s. Mendoza’s agreeable, continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold snowy winters allows the perfect conditions for growing outstanding Malbec. This grape is easy to like for its lusty, deep flavors and aromas of blackberry, plum, red cherry, autumn spice and tilled earth. It’s easy to find delicious, fruit-driven, affordable everyday examples and in prices beyond, quite exceptional ones with dense, supple textures that make them capable of aging.
