Winemaker Notes

The unique pieces of the Willamette Valley's distinctive terroir fit seamlessly together in the 2013 Jigsaw Pinot Noir. A focused aromatic entry with notes of black cherry and sarsaparilla is complemented by a rich garnet hue in the glass. On the palate, lush flavors of plum and pie spice are interwoven with an elegant vein of minerality in a deft balance. Fine, silken tannins and a hint of demerara sugar give weight and fullness to a savory mid-palate. The wine finishes long and supple with flavors of wild iris and sweet earth. Ready to drink now, with the finesse and restraint to cellar.

Sourced from a half-dozen vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills and wider Willamette A.V.A.s - including Cattrall and Temperance Hill, from which Seestedt also essayed vineyard designates in this vintage - the Ransom 2012 Pinot Noir Jigsaw was bottled already last July. Its mint- and sassafras-tinged boysenberry, blackberry and cassis fruit preserve an attractively fresh edge and finish with abundant juiciness.

Home of some of the planet’s most amazingly elegant and expressive Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley is a pastoral, mixed landscape of green, bucolic rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, friendly wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. While the valley claims a cool, continental climate, and is heavily influenced by the cold, moist winds of the Pacific Ocean, its warm and dry summers allow for the steady, even ripening of Pinot noir.

The potential of Willamette Valley Pinot noir continues to attract the investment of serious growers and winemakers both locally and from abroad, as naturally the finished wines bring accolades from professionals and enthusiasts. With a range of styles from delicate dried cherry, raspberry and hibiscus to stronger notes of truffle, mocha, plum and spice, a fine Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a perfect expression of both character and grace.
