Winemaker Notes

This is the best white wine that Qupe makes and by far themost expensive to make, but the results are worth it! Whole cluster pressed and fermented and aged exclusively in one year old Francois Frères Burgundy barrels. Aged a total of 18 months, the rest year on the lees in one year old barrels, then racked and aged the last 6 months in neutral wood. If you are inclined to cellarthis Roussanne, you could put this down for 10-12 yearsand be greatly rewarded!

V 92
Vinous
Pale yellow. Heady orchard and pit fruit scents are complemented by notes of chamomile, sweet butter, honey and lemon curd. Rich, lively and precise, offering bitter pear skin and nectarine flavors that are lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity and a hint of ginger. Silky and seamless on the long, focused finish, which leaves dusty mineral and citrus pith notes behind. This bottling has a great track record for aging.

Santa Maria Valley

View all wine

A lesser-known but elite AVA within the larger Santa Barbara district, the Santa Maria Valley AVA runs precisely east to west starting near the coast, allowing Pacific Ocean air to funnel through and cool the vineyards more inland. This allows grapes to ripen evenly and achieve their full potential by harvest time. Combined with minimal rainfall, consistent warm sunshine, and well-drained soils, it is an ideal environment for grape growing.

Many of the wineries here are small and highly respected, having established a reputation in the 1970s and 80s for producing excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. More recently, Syrah has also proven quite successful in the region. Many vineyards are owned by growers who sell their grapes to other wineries, so it is common to see the same vineyard name on bottlings from different wineries. Bien Nacido Vineyard is perhaps the best-known and most prestigious.

Roussanne

View all wine

Full and silky in body but also charmingly crisp, Roussanne makes a stellar blending grape. Thought to be native to the Rhone River Valley of France, and still predominantly grown there, it is responsible for some of the finest Northern Rhône white wines. Roussanne adds richness and acidity to Marsanne’s soft, fruitiness, making the age worthy and highly respected whites from the appellations of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and St. Joseph. It has earned approval as one of the white varieties for Châteauneuf-du-Pape

In the Glass

Persistent aromas of exotic herbal tea, a full body nearly as complex as a red wine, and distinct apricot and honey flavors make Roussanne unique. With age, the wines gain a more oily and glycerin texture.

Perfect Pairings

Richer fish dishes such as salmon, lobster, crab or grilled shrimp work well with Roussanne and its blends. A meal of roast chicken with herbs and winter vegetables is also delicious. Stuffed Butternut Squash, vegetarian curry and baked brie with apricots are other ideas to pair with Roussanne based wines.

Sommelier Secret

Roussanne takes its name from the French word “roux,” meaning rouge or red because of the grapes’ pink glow. In California, virtually all of the 339 acres of Roussanne come from true clones brought over by Tablas Creek and John Alban.
