Quinta do Noval Late Bottled Vintage Single Quinta 2009 Front Label
Quinta do Noval Late Bottled Vintage Single Quinta 2009 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Quinta do Noval's LBV is a serious glass of port, one that truly behaves like an approachable vintage port. It is a port of only one harvest, produced in quality years that allow the development of full body, aroma and palate. A deep color with a fruity, intense bouquet. An explosion of red fruit on the palate with a solid tannic structure and a long, smooth finish.

The 2009 Late Bottled Vintage Port "Unfiltered" was bottled in 2015 with 91 grams per liter of residual sugar and comes with a long cork, perfect for aging. It is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz and 10% Tinto Cão. I might argue that for LBV, 2009 is even better than 2011. The normally restrained Ports just seemed to get some extra oomph. A tremendously fine LBV, this is rich, yet balanced with superb concentration and intensity of flavor. It is an LBV that helps demonstrate how fine the traditionally-styled LBVs can be. It is impressive in flavor intensity, aromatics, texture, structure and that lingering finish. Some five days later, it was in equally fine shape and still touching all of those bases well. Drink it now, if you wish, but it can certainly improve over the next decade or so. It will also hold for several decades. That's what a fine, traditional LBV does in a fine vintage."

The home of Port—perhaps the most internationally acclaimed beverage—the Douro region of Portugal is one of the world’s oldest delimited wine regions, established in 1756. The vineyards of the Douro, set on the slopes surrounding the Douro River (known as the Duero in Spain), are incredibly steep, necessitating the use of terracing and thus, manual vineyard management as well as harvesting. The Douro's best sites, rare outcroppings of Cambrian schist, are reserved for vineyards that yield high quality Port.

While more than 100 indigenous varieties are approved for wine production in the Douro, there are five primary grapes that make up most Port and the region's excellent, though less known, red table wines. Touriga Nacional is the finest of these, prized for its deep color, tannins and floral aromatics. Tinta Roriz (Spain's Tempranillo) adds bright acidity and red fruit flavors. Touriga Franca shows great persistence of fruit and Tinta Barroca helps round out the blend with its supple texture. Tinta Cão, a fine but low-yielding variety, is now rarely planted but still highly valued for its ability to produce excellent, complex wines.

White wines, generally crisp, mineral-driven blends of Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina and an assortment of other rare but local varieties, are produced in small quantities but worth noting.

With hot summers and cool, wet winters, the Duoro has a maritime climate.
