Winemaker Notes

Featuring the intensity and ripeness that have come to be the hallmark of our wines and a bright acidity that sparkles on the palate, this wine is a stunner. Complex flavors of cedar, black cherry, boysenberry, crème de cassis and pencil shavings make for a multi-layered experience on the palate, along with a rich, dense texture and weighty finish.

There are 1,374 cases of the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which spent 22 months in 40% new French oak. It exhibits classic notes of new saddle leather, unsmoked cigar tobacco, red and blackcurrants, and loamy soil undertones in a full-bodied, intense, opulent, fleshy style. 85% came from Sonoma County and 15% from Napa County. This beauty is on a fast evolutionary track, so drink it during its first 7-8 years of life.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has held up well, although the first signs of fraying can be seen around the edges. There is still plenty of depth left, that is obvious, but some of the freshness is starting to fade. Red plum, mint, mocha and blood orange open nicely in the glass. Even so, it is pretty clear the 2011 will not improve, although it might remain at this plateau of maturity for a few years before the fruit totally fades.

Pride’s wines rarely fail to find an extra measure of richness, and, even in a vintage where richness was not always easy to achieve, this ripe and generously filled Cabernet lives up to winery expectations. It is impressively concentrated but stops well short of excess, and, if fairly sturdy in build, it flirts with an early suggestion of polish that makes it easy to believe in its future.

In this gorgeous wine marked by dancing acidity, dry tannins persist around dense layers of black pepper, black cherry and cedar, all of which integrate well with the oak. A nice representation of a cooler vintage, the wine possesses plenty of richness and power balanced exquisitely with a sense of brightness on the palate. Enjoy through 2021. Cellar Selection

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
