This is earthy and smoky on the nose with plums and berries. Hints of dried fruit and spices. Full body and a fresh core of ripe berries, plums and bark. Some green tea, too. Very long and flavorful. Persistent and beautiful. Drink now or hold.

Poggio Nardone's interpretation of the vintage shows dark lines and pretty elegance. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers intense aromas of dried cherry, blackberry confit, spice, leather, tar and licorice. These aromas are presented in a clear and forthcoming manner that highlights the best of Sangiovese Grosso. It ages in large oak casks for three years. There is some astringency in terms of mouthfeel but the wine is also extremely young. Give it a few more years to flesh out.

Founded in 1996, Poggio Nardone shares a border with our very own Mocali estate in the region of Tavernelle of Montalcino. Although the Ciacci family had owned the property for some time, it was not until Tiziano and Alessandra, then newlyweds, were looking through some old manuscripts that they were able to determine the original boundaries of what had once been a much larger Montalcino vineyard, the majority of which had been overgrown. Since then, they have made it their mission to restore the property to its former glory, using as a guide the notations made by Alessandra’s grandfather of the best planting areas. The estate is modest in size (less than 10ha) and their location is ideal, with the combination of high altitude vineyards (almost1,500 feet) and compact marl and limestone soils producing dense, long-lived reds that can be shy in their youth, but are well worth cellaring.

Famous for its bold, layered and long-lived red, Brunello di Montalcino, the town of Montalcino is about 70 miles south of Florence, and has a warmer and drier climate than that of its neighbor, Chianti. The Sangiovese grape is king here, as it is in Chianti, but Montalcino has its own clone called Brunello.

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. From the valleys, where deeper deposits of clay are found, come wines typically bolder, more concentrated and rich in opulent black fruit. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas; these sites reach up to over 1,600 feet and have shallow soils of rocks and shale.

Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before realease and once released, typically needs more time in bottle for its drinking potential to be fully reached. The good news is that Montalcino makes a “baby brother” version. The wines called Rosso di Montalcino are often made from younger vines, aged for about a year before release, offer extraordinary values and are ready to drink young.
