Winemaker Notes
Intense ruby red in color. The nose offers nice fresh and crunchy fruit, enriched with mineral and spicy notes. The palate is medium bodied with red berry notes. The tannins are elegant, silky, enveloping and very soft. The finish is precise, clean and lively.
Blend: 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot

A firm and creamy red with herb, currant and light spice character. Medium-bodied with nice crushed stone and berry flavors. Crunchy fruit and tannins. Very drinkable now but even better in a year or so.

Poggio al Tesoro's 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio makes a great jump forward in quality and intensity with this vintage. Named after the little river Seggio that runs through the estate's vineyards, this is a blend of 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine reveals soft, ripe cherry fruit with lots of plush texturing at the back. The tannins are tame and the wine spreads evenly over the palate.

"The 2020 Bolgheri Il Seggio is a gorgeous, complex wine. Sweet herbs, tobacco, mocha and cedar open on the effusive, inviting bouquet. Pliant and racy but not at all heavy, Il Seggio is another inviting wine from Poggio al Tesoro. All the elements are so nicely balanced. This is so refined."

The nose toggles between fresh, herbal notes of grass, eucalyptus and peppermint, and then savory notes of tar and pepper. On the palate, berries take things in a sweeter direction, with a latent spice providing pop. Tannins are chalky and firm, and acidity lifts the finish.

This leans to the racy side, displaying lacy blackberry and black cherry fruit, with licorice and mineral accents. Though fluid midpalate, this has some tannins that need to be resolved. Firm finish. Made from a blend of 50% Merlot, 20% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2019 Il Seggio is generous with its perfume of sweet blue fruits, purple flowers, and eucalyptus. It is full-bodied, with ripe tannins and fresh acidity that help to define its structure and lift it off the palate, which speaks to the somewhat more direct nature of the vintage. Offering notes of red plum, dried earth, and fresh herbs, this is a lovely, fresh wine to drink 2023-2030.
One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
An outstanding wine region made famous by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines for his own consumption in 1940s on his San Guido estate, and called the resulting wine, Sassicaia. Today the region’s Tuscan reds are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which can be made as single varietal wines or blends. The local Sangiovese can make up no more than 50% of the blends. Today Sassicaia has its own DOC designation within the Bogheri DOC appellation.
