Winemaker Notes

The 2006 vintage was a year where grapes were harvested late and the yields were naturally very low. Given the extended hang time, low crop levels and even ripening, the 2006 PlumpJack Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine of wonderful density with fresh, pure fruit balancing out the integrated tannins and seamless acidity.

Primary aromas of black cherry, plum, cocoa powder and black currant are followed by secondary aromas of raspberries, baker chocolate and briar patch. In the mouth, primary flavors of plums, roasted almond, black cherry and black olive are followed by secondary aromas of blackberry pie filling, vanilla bean and stone fruit. The finish is long and rich with a hint of tannin which points in the direction that this is a wine with ageing potential. Beautifully crafted with wonderful fruit purity, this wine will easily age for the next 7-10 years.

PlumpJack Winery, Napa Valley, California
2006 Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
PlumpJack Winery sits squarely in the heart of Napa Valley's renowned Oakville region, surrounded by a 42-acre estate vineyard highly-regarded for the quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon. Both their winery building and their vineyard date back to the 1800s, when winemaking pioneers first took advantage of a unique position on the valley floor. The east side of their vineyard lies along the foothills of the Vaca mountain range and yields grapes with the kind of bold fruit character that comes from well-drained hillside soils. To the west, their estate lies in the Napa River flood zone. Here, their vines take root in rich, deep clay soild, for grapes with softer, more supple varietal character. From their oldest, rockiest section - the "I" Block, where they source their Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve - to more recent plantings, they strive to maintain balanced vines.

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
