Winemaker Notes

Reflecting the excellence of the 2015 vintage, this elegant and complex Bolgheri Superiore displays a deep, intense ruby-red color, revealing mature aromas of ripe dark berries seamlessly integrated with refined spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, while the powerful palate delivers magnificent structure and velvety tannins before culminating in an incredibly long, persistent finish that pairs beautifully with game, pork, lamb, and rich mutton dishes./p>

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the PietraNova 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Renzo shows the best balance to my palate in this group of three releases. There is a lot of ripeness in those other wines, but the Renzo is slightly more restrained, which is nice, owing perhaps to the neutral or used oak here. Blackberry and plum cedes to spice, leather and tar. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds linearity and tighter contouring here.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

An outstanding wine region made famous by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines for his own consumption in 1940s on his San Guido estate, and called the resulting wine, Sassicaia. Today the region’s Tuscan reds are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which can be made as single varietal wines or blends. The local Sangiovese can make up no more than 50% of the blends. Today Sassicaia has its own DOC designation within the Bogheri DOC appellation.
