Winemaker Notes

Torrione is made mainly from pure Sangiovese grapes, both those that come from historic vines of the 70s and ones more recently planted with high density. The yield per plant is notably restricted allowing a concentration of all the noble components of the grape, fundamental for the full-bodied character of this wine.

Professional Ratings

  • 93
A very successful 2012 with a beautiful texture of ripe tannins plus cherry, chocolate and berry character. Full body and a silky texture. Outstanding harmony and balance.
  • 91
The 2012 Torrione is a plush and beautiful wine although the vintage heat does leave its mark. There is a slightly amber hue and the rim and the fruit is mature with plum, dried cherry and blackberry preserves. The mouthfeel shows dusty mineral tones and silky tannins. The blend is mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This vintage marks the 25th anniversary of the wine (1988-2012).
  • 91
Pure red sangiovese flavors predominate in this blend that includes 15 percent merlot and 5 percent cabernet sauvignon. Fresh and refined, with good concentration and tight structure, it offers pleasure now and will hold for several more years.
  • 90
Effusive aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry and peony highlight this elegant red. Well-integrated tannins amp up the structure and density on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2023.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
