Winemaker Notes

O Sole Mio’ comes from an organic, meticulously farmed star-owned vineyard and it has quickly become a star on its own in our Summer Wine lineup. The wine opens with classic, delicate aromas of semi-ripe gooseberry and citrus blossom, followed by bright pear and lime flavors. Zesty acidity on the palate with a refreshing pink grapefruit and crushed rock finish, bringing brightness, energy, and complexity. Reminds me of a classic Sancerre from their best producers.

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc O Sole Mio Two Wolves Vineyard is a slightly bigger, racier wine compared to the Le Nouveau, yet it has a similar herbal character in its vibrant citrus, mint, and chalky mineral-like aromas and flavors. Beautifully balanced, medium-bodied, and concentrated, this riveting Sauvignon has incredible purity and precision. It's impressive today yet will put on weight with a year in bottle and drink nicely through at least 2033.

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc O Sole Mio Two Wolves Vineyard evokes aromas of white peach, tangerine, dried spices, citrus peels and wet clay, aromas that instantly bring to mind the wines of Didier Dagueneau, whom Paul Lato cites as inspiration for this cuvée and pays successful homage to. The palate is broad and pleasantly marked by its sur lie aging, concluding with a refreshing, chalky and cleansing finish.

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Two Wolves Vineyard O Sole Mio is an appealing, vibrant wine from Paul Lato. Lemon confit, white flowers, crushed rocks. sage, tomato leaf and light tropical notes all run through. This has good energy and plenty of drive to match.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Ranging from cool and foggy in the west to warm and dry in the east, the Santa Ynez Valley is a climatically diverse growing area. The most expansive AVA within the larger Santa Barbara County region, Santa Ynez is also home to a wide variety of soil types and geographical features. The appellation is further divided into four distinct sub-AVAs—Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District and Happy Canyon—each with its own defining characteristics.

A wide selection of grapes is planted here—more than sixty different varieties, and counting. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in the chilly west, while Zinfandel, Rhône blends, and Bordeaux blends rule the arid east. Syrah is successful at both ends of the valley, with a lean and peppery, Old-World sensibility closer to the coast and lush berry fruit further inland.
