Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The nose is dark and alluring, with aromas of black currant, saddle leather, and milk chocolate, with a subtle and delicate floral note. The mouth is soft and substantial, with round, mouth-filling tannins layering smoothly with the densely packed flavors of chocolate-covered cherries, spicy black plum, and smoky espresso. This wine is a crowd pleaser and will pair well with a meal of pan-roasted pork chops with thyme and currants, served with bacon-roasted Brussels sprouts and a wild rice pilaf.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Parcel 41 Merlot is bright and smooth. TASTING NOTES: This wine shows aromas and flavors of red fruits, black fruits, mineral notes, and wood. Enjoy it with grilled cheeseburgers. (Tasted: October 25, 2020, San Francisco, CA)

Parcel 41, California

Bay Area natives and husband and wife team, Elijah & Leslie Pfister started a little wine import company back in 2008. Given their proximity to Napa and Sonoma and burgeoning reputation in fine wine, the two were urged by friends to start making wines of their own from grapes farmed in California. Due to their proximity to great sources throughout the state, it was simple enough to go into their "backyard" so to speak, and work with some of the best farmers and vineyard sources in the world. They got so good at sourcing and blending, they decided to make it their full time focus and went ahead and purchased, Nine North Wine Company based in Napa, CA. Nine North Wine Company represents a varied portfolio of limited production, handcrafted wines from California, Oregon, Washington and New Zealand. They specialize in offering exceptional quality and value across several brands, with prices that won't dent your pocketbook.

As Napa Valley’s third most planted grape, Napa Valley Merlot shows time and time again its potential to produce exceptional results. Napa’s vaunted combination of climate, soil and the human factor of winemaking expertise lead to big, ripe, cellar-worthy and world-class versions.

Whether made by itself in single varietal bottlings or as an important role in Bordeaux Blends, Merlot continues a prominent role in this famous region. While Cabernet typically takes the lead role, Merlot’s contribution—even at 10% to 20% or so—is significant indeed. Often described as “the flesh on Cabernet’s bones,” Merlot lends a soft, round and plush character that beautifully complements Cabernet’s linear, full-throttle structure. Its flavors of plums plus subtle herbs and mint also dovetail nicely with Cabernet’s blackberry and cassis.
