Distiller Notes

For the first time in the brand's 150 year history, Old Forester is elated to present this new expression, unfiltered, as a single barrel at barrel strength. As such, each barrel will have it’s own unique tasting notes and various proofs – but all distinctly Old Forester Rye. This expression, although extremely limited, will be available nationwide though not through Old Forester's private By the Barrel program.

Dessert forward on the nose with notes of creamy vanilla and lemon custard, alongside rich caramel and dark brown sugar. Full-bodied with a base of ripe orchard fruit, subtle cinnamon stick, dried dill, and hazelnut. Lengthy and spice driven, with peripheral black pepper and unpinning of green anisette and crisp mint.

Known for its peppery, spicy bite, Rye serves as the ideal base for cocktails like the Sazerac, Manhattan or Old Fashioned. In order for a spirit to be labeled an American Rye Whiskey, the mash bill must be comprised of at least 51% rye grain. The remainder of the mash is most often a combination of malted barley, wheat or corn. After distillation is complete, the spirit is transferred to unused, charred white oak barrels for a minimum of two years, though many producers choose to age longer.
