Winemaker Notes

Pristine, high-pitched aromas of alpine red fruits – tart and sweet cherries, wild raspberries, and red roses. For such an intense wine, there is an effortless sense of harmony on the entry, more floral than savory, followed by a mélange of deep red fruit flavors and a distinct oyster shell minerality that becomes more pronounced with time in the glass. Finishes gracefully, with fine tannins and a rising perfume.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth is a glorious, magical wine that I can’t get enough of. Pale ruby-purple, it offers incredibly pure, kaleidoscopic aromas: blueberry, pomegranate and cranberry are layered with accents of nori, iron, bergamot and soaring floral perfume. The light-bodied palate is pure, bright and seamless, offering incredible concentration without weight. It features complex spice and bitters-laced flavors framed by velvety tannins, ending with an intoxicatingly long, nuanced finish.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands is bright and energetic with aromas of red fruit, cedar, layered spice, and orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied and has a silky texture, with fine tannins and an incredibly long finish revealing saline minerality.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
