Winemaker Notes

The 2000 Noon Reserve Shiraz opens up to show aromas of dark berry fruits along with tar, asphalt, molasses and spice with a herbal edge. From a lesser vintage, this wine continues to show well each time we open it. It possesses a full bodied palate though there is less richness to it than say the 2001 (from a riper vintage). The acidity is a little more prominent than usual and there is a slightly leaner, drier style to this wine as you might expect from the vintage but it is still providing excellent drinking after a decade.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The blockbuster 2000 Shiraz Reserve was aged in small barriques, foudres, and demi-muids. It boasts an inky black color as well as a fabulous bouquet of acacia flowers intermixed with blackberry and cassis liqueur, creosote, and camphor. Exceptionally long and layered, this opulent, voluptuous, pure Shiraz is a thrill to drink. The tannin, acidity, and alcohol (14.9%) are seamlessly integrated in this modern-day classic. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. This is one of the great wines of South Australia!

The darling of the Australian small winery scene, Noon has a great following both in Australia and in particular the US. Drew Noon produces some unique wines packed with ripe red fruit and often high levels of alcohol. Drew Noon took over operating the family owned Noon winery after spending time as Winemaker at Cassegrain and other ventures in Victoria.

The Eclipse and Reserve shiraz can command high levels of capital increase and are definitely wines to hold on to (if you can get them).

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
