Distiller Notes

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of From the Barrel's debut, Nikka is releasing a limited edition "From the Barrel Extra Marriage." This expression features double the marriage time —up to 6 months of marrying in oak—resulting in a whisky with richer flavor and a longer finish. The secret behind its gorgeous flavor is the unique combination of complex blending, higher ABV 51.4% and secondary aging process known as "marriage.”The complex formula is created by blending more than 100 different batches of malt and grain whiskies. After blending, the whisky is filled into used barrels and matured for up to 6 more months. This "marriage" process harmonizes all components in the formula, resulting in a mellow taste.

Sharing a great deal with Scotch in terms of production methods and ingredients, today’s hugely successful commercial market of Japanese Whisky owes much to the research of Masataka Taketsuru. In 1918, this Japanese national travelled to Scotland with the intention of studying organic chemistry but instead became fascinated with Scotch Whisky production. Similar to Scotch Whisky, Japanese Whisky also uses malted barley as the fermentation base and long-term aging in wooden barrels. However, the often-used Mizunara oak, rather than French or American oak, imparts uniquely spicy and citrus-like characteristics to a Japanese Whisky.
