    Winemaker Notes

A wine with expressive red berry aromas and plush, complex, black and wild cherry fruit, which broadens out on the palate. The wine shows a very exuberant character, typical of both the outstanding 2005 vintage and the fact that this bottling has become one of the stars in the Nicolas Potel portfolio.

    Nicolas Potel, France
Nicolas Potel is one of a new breed of vinificateurs who are redefining the meaning of négociant. His father, the highly respected Gerard Potel, began a négoce house in the mid 1990s while manager of Domaine de la Pousse d'Or. Upon Gerard's death, Nicolas left the Domaine to take over the négoce business and his philosophy remains unchanged from when he worked with his father at Pousse d'Or.

He bought about 60% fruit for the 1997 vintage and 50% for 1998 (the rest being post-fermentation wine). He is very involved in the vineyard management with his contract growers and insists, whenever possible, on a biodynamic approach. He has strict requirements as to vine age (minimum of 35 years), harvest date, selection and parcel location. His selection process is extreme and quality driven: in 1998, about 500 wines were tasted to net 25 purchases.

The future is optimistic for Nicolas and his personal relationships with the leading growers of the Côte d'Or have given him access to fruit and wine which normally would never be sold off by the estate. His training in Australia and California leads him to prefer generous fruit qualities, and his wines are remarkably rich and sensual.

Celebrated as some of the best wine in the universe, red wine from Burgundy, otherwise known as red Burgundy, is Pinot noir. In fact Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot noir and the source of the planet’s most sensual, delicate, valuable and sought-after Pinot noir wines.

Understanding and enjoying red Burgundy can stay simple, with a basic knowledge of its subregions, become more intricate by dialing down to the villages and vineyards or become a life-long passion, exploring climats (plots of vines), vintages and the post French Revolution land ownership laws. In any case, a fine red Burgundy will display refined nuances of black currant, red fruit, earth, spice, alluring floral aromatics and have great elegance, complexity and longevity.

Most famous, praised and collected of Burgunday are those from the Côte d'Or. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the area now called Côte d'Or was under a warm ocean whose sea floor has, over time, shifted and decomposed into various layers of limestone, sandstone and clay interspersed with ancient fossilized sea creatures. This is what is referred to as the famous escarpment upon which all of the highly sought-after Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards can be found. In other words, from north to south, the best vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-St-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard and Volnay follow the path of this ancient sea bed.
