Just bottled. Just a little bit more intense in purple but not much. The fruit is balanced and at the perfect pitch of ripeness. Much more powerful on the palate with some black cherry notes as well as a little red fruit, mix of tannins and acidity, neither too prominent. Very different in style from Clos St-Jean but equally a success. Oak shows a little more.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Morgeots (Rouge) exhibits notes of dark berries, sweet spices and toasty oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate, with a concentrated core of fruit and lively balancing acids. Best after 2025. Rating: 90+

Morey-Coffinet was founded in the late 1970s by Michel Morey (son of the late Marc Morey) and his wife Fabienne (from the Pillot clan). Their son, Thibault, succeeded the couple, taking the helm of the estate in 2009. Thibault joined his father in a long lineage of winemakers in Chassagne-Montrachet with great gravitas in their family names such as Pillot, Morey, and Coffinet. He has earned the respect of his peers through his thoughtful and detailed approach. In 2014, he began to pursue biodynamic viticulture, and in 2015 gained certification.
With a stable foundation of 1er Crus from the southeast-facing hillside, the whites speak to the very essence of Chassagne, with fragrant aromas framed by powerful minerality. The reds capture the roasted, muscular aromas of Chassagne terroir and display silky texture and balance. “When the vines are properly cared for, you can take everything from the skin to the seed,” says Thibault, continuing, “it is a guarantee of complexity and stability in the wine, which will age all the better with moderate doses of SO2.” The oak regimen changes yearly to reflect the vintage, and the aromatics of the wines are expressive and vibrant, with lively tension and energy.
Thibault continues to push the quality of his domaine to a whole different level with his expressive, powerful, wonderfully hedonistic wines, and to much acclaim. Here in the Côte de Beaune, a transition, but not a revolution, is gently in progress.
Celebrated as some of the best wine in the universe, red wine from Burgundy, otherwise known as red Burgundy, is Pinot noir. In fact Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot noir and the source of the planet’s most sensual, delicate, valuable and sought-after Pinot noir wines.
Understanding and enjoying red Burgundy can stay simple, with a basic knowledge of its subregions, become more intricate by dialing down to the villages and vineyards or become a life-long passion, exploring climats (plots of vines), vintages and the post French Revolution land ownership laws. In any case, a fine red Burgundy will display refined nuances of black currant, red fruit, earth, spice, alluring floral aromatics and have great elegance, complexity and longevity.
Most famous, praised and collected of Burgunday are those from the Côte d'Or. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the area now called Côte d'Or was under a warm ocean whose sea floor has, over time, shifted and decomposed into various layers of limestone, sandstone and clay interspersed with ancient fossilized sea creatures. This is what is referred to as the famous escarpment upon which all of the highly sought-after Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards can be found. In other words, from north to south, the best vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-St-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard and Volnay follow the path of this ancient sea bed.
