Mitchell Watervale Riesling 2002

Mitchell is one of the leading smaller wineries in the Clare region, having been established in 1975 by husband and wife team of Andrew and Jane Mitchell. Andrew is the primary winemaker, while Jane assists and also manages the other areas of the family business. All Mitchell wines display classic Clare region characters, in particular the long-lived Rieslings, intense Cabernets and the icon wine - Peppertree Shiraz. Other interesting offerings include an old vine Grenache and also a Semillon. The winery is housed in an old apple shed, and its compact design is perfect for the limited production of classic Claire varieties. Total production each year ranges between 30,000-35,000 cases.

Mitchell's two original vineyards within the Clare District are at Watervale neat the Southern end of the region, and at Sevenhill, near the winery. Riesling and Cabernet were the original varieties produced, but the additions of Shiraz, Semillon and Grenache over the years have added tremendously to the Mitchell offering. Andrew grew up in the Clare Valley, and has always had tremendous respect for the area's fruit quality, in particular Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Both Andrew and Jane earned formal degrees in Wine Science and Wine Production, respectively, and have been instrumental in developing the justly deserved worldwide recognition for Clare and its wines over the past 25 years.
