Distiller Notes
The recipe for Mathilde Orange XO dates back 200 years. Sweet orange peels are first macerated in a grape spirit and then distilled. A refined and aged brandy is added to the orange peel distillate and the spirit is then aged before bottling. The result is a liqueur with a refined nose, with an intense orange aroma and a hint of vanilla. The flavor is powerful, the aromatics are potent and the body is rich. The spirit gives remarkable length on the finish and an overall voluptuous, round taste.

Made with Cognac, this deep-gold orange liqueur is higher proof than most, and comes across as a little hot. Nevertheless, it's delicious, with enticing honey, baking spice and flower notes. A pleasing note of bitter orange peel cuts the sweetness and refreshes the palate. This would be particularly delightful mixed with brown spirits like brandy or whiskey.
First prepared by 13th century Italian monks as herbal medicines and elixirs, Liqueurs are distilled spirits that have been combined with flavoring agents. A range of herbs, spices, nuts, fruits and flowers can be used, and a sweetener such as sugar or corn syrup is often added. While typically rather sweet, some examples are herbaceous or tart and pair exceptionally well with desserts or act as a delightful addition to cocktails.
