Winemaker Notes

Luscious, fleshy, rich and round, mouth-coating, and full-bodied. Take your pick; this big Chardonnay has it all. The winery selected the best barrel lots of their Dunnigan Hills fruit to create The Arsonist Chardonnay. Aromas of toasty oak, caramel apple and crème brulee mingle with cinnamon and barrel spice. Upfront flavors of buttery toast are layered over fresh mango and star fruit. A touch of Russian River Valley Chardonnay adds zest to the finish. Integrated sweet oak characters harmonized with a big buttery palate and loads of tropical fruit.

Blend: 100% Chardonnay

The 2012 Chardonnay The Arsonist is one of the super-values in the marketplace. There are only 1,700 cases of this beauty. Copious notes of crisp honeysuckle, pineapple, white peach and caramelized pears are followed by a medium-bodied, surprisingly rich, concentrated, pure wine with zesty acids buttressing its intensity.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
