Winemaker Notes

This wine is a diamond in the rough! It begins with a fresh aroma full of volume, honey, sweet white confection, floral bouquet and sparkling tropical notes. It has a showy, full body, good viscosity, bright white fruits and a plush center and tingly linger that both tastes and leaves you feeling fresh on the palate and wanting more! Hailing from the famed Mill Station Vineyard, managed by Dutton Ranch of Russian River Valley, this Chardonnay shows it all. A beautiful color, the volume is turned way up in the nose and the mouthfeel of sweet citrus and tropical fruit on the entry with firm acidity and richness in the midpalate leaves you wanting another taste. Aged for 11 months sur lies in French oak, stainless steel, and concrete, this is both an eclectic and playful statement in Chardonnay and a wine deserving vineyard designate status. This offering is ready to enjoy now and should age well from release to 2019 or longer if cellared well.

A fine achievement in Chardonnay from a marquee vineyard! The 2013 Macauley Dutton Ranch exhibits medium straw, yellow color; bright peach skin and mineral in the aroma, excellent richness and persistence; medium bodied, racy and fine on the palate; dry, excellent acidity, well balanced; bright core fruit flavors, focused with excellent concentration; long finish, zippy aftertaste. You'll be hard pressed to find a better chard in the marketplace. (Tasted: June 2, 2015, San Francisco, CA)

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
