Winemaker Notes

Luigi Einaudi Barolo Villero has a strong color and a long finish with a consistent aftertaste. The scent is rich in hints of red fruits such as very ripe raspberry and pomegranate, with floral notes.

Professional Ratings

The Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2021 Barolo Villero (with fruit from Castiglione Falletto) has an ashy or mineral layer that follows to blackcurrant and dried cherry. That elegant mineral note is what distinguishes this extremely vertical, razor-sharp Nebbiolo. Medium-plus texture follows through with good power on the palate thanks to the precision and firmness of the tannins.

Plum, cherry, menthol and sanguine flavors converge in this densely woven red. Balanced, this is vibrant midpalate, with a solid dusting of tannins on the finish. There’s an elegant feel overall, with persistence and refinement.

Responsible for some of the most elegant and age-worthy wines in the world, Nebbiolo, named for the ubiquitous autumnal fog (called nebbia in Italian), is the star variety of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Grown throughout the area, as well as in the neighboring Valle d’Aosta and Valtellina, it reaches its highest potential in the Piedmontese villages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. Outside of Italy, growers are still very much in the experimentation stage but some success has been achieved in parts of California. Somm Secret—If you’re new to Nebbiolo, start with a charming, wallet-friendly, early-drinking Langhe Nebbiolo or Nebbiolo d'Alba.
