Winemaker Notes

The Clos-de-Beze vineyard is the oldest of Gevrey's vineyards, planted by the monks of the Abbey of Beze after its bequest to them, in 630, by Duke Amalgaire of Burgundy. In the 1200s it was sold intact to the order of the Cathedral of Langres, who leased it out in parcels until the 1700s, when both Le Chambertin and Clos- de-Beze were acquired, nearly in their entirety, by Claude Jobert. Since Jobert's ownership, Clos-de-Beze has become divided, as of 1985, among eighteen proprietors.

The Clos-de-Beze occupies a rectangular 38-acre plot in the center of Gevrey's grand cru slope just north of Le Chambertin. Clos-de-Bèze may take the Le Chambertin appellation, but not vice-versa, an indication of its slightly superior quality. Indeed, though Clos-de-Beze is nearly seven acres larger than Le Chambertin, its average annual production is approximately six percent less. Domaine Louis Jadot controls 2.04 acres in Clos-de-Beze of which half were acquired in 1985 through the purchase of Domaine Clair Dau, with the balance under long-term contract. The majestic wine it yields is a quintessential Clos-de-Beze: rich, sumptuous and with an extraordinary balance of power, elegance and delicacy. The brilliant, brocaded texture finishes in long, lingering notes of berries and oak.

If you ever needed to know why Grand Crus are better vineyards and make better wine than the rest, this wine is the perfect example. It has all the richness and opulence of great Pinot Noir, but at the same time, with its firm structure and plum and damson flavors, it magnifies those qualities into something impressive and long-lasting.

It's immediately clear that this is a step up in both elegance and aromatic breadth with the impressive mélange of spiced earth and smoked game notes and red and black pinot fruit aromas that merge seamlessly into the classy, pure and refined flavors that are more accessible than usual yet they retain obvious power, muscle and finishing punch. There is a real sense of drive and energy, particularly on the explosive backend.

Wine Spectator
A backward, concentrated red, this is tight and closed. There's a sense of its deep black cherry, licorice and mineral flavors and dense ripe tannins, along with its refinement and length, but this needs time. Has a terrific finish. Best from 2010 through 2022.

This small village is home to the Grands Crus in the farthest northerly stretches of Côte de Nuits and is famous for some of the deepest and firmest Burgundian Pinot noir.

Gevrey boasts nine Grands Crus, the best of which are arguably Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. As with all of the fragmented vineyards of Burgundy, it isn’t easy to differentiate between the two, which are situated adjacent with Clos de Bèze slightly further up the hill than Le Chambertin. Clos de Bèze has a shallower soil and if you’re really counting, may produce wines less intense but more likely to charm. Some compare Le Chambertin in both power and plentitude only to the prized Romanée-Conti Grand Cru farther south in Vosne-Romanée.

Two other Grands Crus vineyards, Mazis-Chambertin (also written Mazy-) and Latricières-Chambertin command almost as much regard as Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. The upper part of Mazy, called Les Mazis Haut is the best and Latricières-Chambertin offers an abundance of juicy fruit and a silky texture in the warmer vintages.

Other Grands Crus are Ruchottes-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin.

The most respected Pinot noir wines from Gevrey-Chambertin are robust and powerful but at the same time, velvety and expressive: black fruit, black liquorice and chocolate come into play. After some time in the bottle, the wines are harmonious with bright and sometimes candied fruit, and aromas of musk, truffle and forest floor. These have staying power.
