Winemaker Notes

1997 was an outstanding vintage for our red varieties, producing supple fruit with great body and depth of flavour. The 1997 Lindemans Padthaway Pinot Noir is an excellent example of this classic variety and is arguably the most stylistic Pinot Noir produced from this vineyard. Colour: Vibrant cherry red colour. Nose: Pinot Noir fruit characters of strawberry and plum fill the glass while subtle oak and extended lees character contribute to the wines complexity. Palate: This is a medium-bodied wine with soft fruit characters of plum and strawberry layered with nutty vanillin oak. There is great persistence on the finish. Lindemans Padthaway Pinot Noirs appealing and vibrant fruit characters will give greatest enjoyment now or in the next 18 months to two years. A delicious match with seared Atlantic salmon and mash, Chinese-style roast duck or ripe Australian cheeses.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

An inland subregion of the Limestone Coast, Padthaway has made a name for itself as a significant source of quality Shiraz even though the region grows other varieties. Padthaway is home to only a handful of producers; most Padthaway Shiraz goes to wines made outside of its borders.
