Winemaker Notes

An Ode to the Cherries of Michigan. Silken upon entry, this wine widens with power and elegance as it travels. No brooding in some boreal forest here. Rich, bold, and concentrated, the pluot, black cherry, and toasty oak flavors build momentum with time in the glass, fanning out and extending to gravelly earth and snappy berry flavors. Seamless through and through. Leaves one both satisfied and salivating.

Professional Ratings

  • 91

This smooth and sophisticated wine from the property formerly known as Breggo has good structure, no rough edges and a solid core of ripe plum and black cherry flavors, seasoned lightly with spicy oak. The texture is moderately tannic, but velvety and polished.

Lichen Estate Winery Image
The 203-acre Lichen Estate sits at the heart of Anderson Valley, half way between Boonville and Philo. They have planted seven acres of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines in 2008 on meter-by-meter spacing, the same used for Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy and Champagne. We have farmed it organically from the outset. This singular vineyard produces singular wines.

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
