Winemaker Notes

The 2015 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon captures the pure expression of our unique terroir at Lancaster Estate. It is a blend of all five of the red Bordeaux varietals we have planted on our volcanic hillside slopes. The wine has an intensely deep color with rich aromas of dark berry fruits, espresso and violet. Commanding and multi-layered flavors of plum, black currant, and blackberry jam meld together with savory leather and mocha. Refined and polished tannins provide amazing structure and depth that gain power as the wine moves across the palate for a long, decadent finish. This wine should be decanted when young, and will only gain in complexity for the next 15-20 years.

Critical Acclaim

RP 93
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals notes of warm blackcurrants, black cherry compote and blueberry preserves with touches of cedar, mocha, new leather and sandalwood plus a waft of bay leaves. Full-bodied and giving a taut frame of chewy tannins, it has loads of muscular fruit and a long cedar-laced finish.
D 92
Decanter
This is serious stuff, a wine with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot co-mingling with Cabernet Sauvignon in perfect harmony. Multilayered and complex, its black plum and blackcurrant fruit is enhanced by a mountain minerality reminiscent of graphite, with oaky notes of ground espresso and mocha. Sturdy tannins and fresh acidity make it a candidate for cellaring, though it’s delicious now. A modern Alexander Valley style. 60% new French oak.
WS 90
Wine Spectator
A seamless style, supple and graceful, with rounded tannins that have some grip and a rich center of dark berry, gravel, spice and wood flavors. Drink now through 2027.

Lancaster Estate, California

Lancaster Estate is a vineyard and winery in the classic Bordeaux tradition. Lancaster Estate’s Alexander Valley appellation luxury wines are limited–edition, 100 percent estate–grown Cabernet family varietals from our 53 acre hillside property. The winery focuses on one wine per year, a blend which is entirely vintage and estate–reflective.

Located at the southern tip of the Alexander Valley, Lancaster Estate rests in the foothills of the western Mayacamas Mountains at the confluence of the Chalk Hill and Knights Valley appellations. Within the rolling hills of this “golden triangle,” an ideal climate of warm days and cool nights combines with the region's myriad soil types to produce red wines of uncommon grace and style.

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe. Inherently high in tannins and acidity, the best bottlings of Cabernet can age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in temperate climates like Bordeaux, forming the base of the Medoc reds, which are typically mostly Cabernet with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. (Enjoying a great deal of success in various regions around the world, this blend is now globally referred to as a Bordeaux Blend.) Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines.

Tasting Notes for Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is a dry red wine rich in color, tannin and extract. It expresses notes of blackberry, cassis, plum, currant, spice and tobacco. In the Old World you'll often find the more earthy side of Cabernet. In warmer regions like California Washington, Argentina, Chile and Australia, you can typically expect more upfront fruit flavors.

Perfect Food Pairings for Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is right at home with rich, intense meat dishes—beef, lamb and venison, in particular—where its opulent fruit and decisive tannins make an equal match to the dense protein of the meat. With a mature Cabernet, opt for tender, slow-cooked meat dishes.

Sommelier Secrets for Cabernet Sauvignon

Despite the modern importance and ubiquity of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is actually a relatively young variety. In 1997, DNA profiling revealed the grape to be a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc which took place in 17th century southwestern France.
