Winemaker Notes

To rich hues in the glass, the nose opens with the smoky reveal of reduction. Given space to develop, the wine unfurls a range of yellow fruit, initially shy, and redolent of apple, quince, corn as well as salted popcorn. A subtle barrel influence kicks off the aromatics, soon marked with fresh tobacco and mild culinary herbs. Upon first sip, the wine glides silkily across the palate, flanked by beautifully integrated oak. The filigreed texture and fine creaminess are a pure sensory delight, and promise considerable development for many years to come.

Like a talented actor, the Chardonnay Réserve presents a different face when matched with different dishes. It harmonizes just as beautifully with grilled or roasted fish and seafood as a classic oven-baked poulet roti with lemon and thyme.

Professional Ratings

For such a young wine, this is showing incredible complexity and character, with notes of flint upfront, followed by hominy, sea salt, lemon peel and apple, all tied by vibrant acidity. Texturally seductive, velvety and smooth, with a long, charming finish.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
