Distiller Notes

Master Blender’s Selection No. 5 is the fifth release in Hennessy’s Master Blender’s Series of single-batch bottlings that will never be replicated. This year’s release was created by eighth-generation Master Blender, Renaud Fillioux de Gironde, and pays homage to the 18 families of distillers who are the bedrock of our supply and expertly craft exceptional eaux-de-vie -exclusively for Hennessy. Many of these families have ties to Hennessy that date back more than 200 years. The Master Blender limited his selection of eaux-de-vie to those from the 18 families, of 800 passionate distillers that we work with. Then, he narrowed the selection to the highest-quality batches, those that he considered superior in quality. What’s interesting about MBS 5 is the unprecedented selection process. Selecting at least one eaux-de-vie per family, Renaud blended their characters and personalities to create this inimitable cognac. This blend embodies a perfect harmony of the selected eaux-de-vie and reveals a powerful cognac on the palate with delicate nuances of cocoa, spices, and candied orange.

Widely regarded as the finest and most complex grape-based spirit in the world, Cognac follows rigorously strict production guidelines. It is made exclusively of wine—most commonly from Ugni Blanc—from the Charente and Charente-Maritime regions surrounding the town of Cognac in southwestern France. After a second distillation in antique copper pot stills (called charentais), the spirit is transferred to French oak barrels and aged a minimum of two years (VS). Cognac is classified by both age and region (Cru). The Grande Champagne Cru and Petite Champagne Cru, both having shallow limestone soils, are the most respected.
