Winemaker Notes

The deep color gives a clue to the concentration of aromas and flavors to follow. Dark cherry and blackberry fruit dominate the nose with undercurrents of black licorice and pepper. The palate brings to mind a berry compote enriched by elusive hints of spice. Director's Cut Shiraz is famous for its poise and balance and this vintage is no exception. It is reminiscent of the classic 2004 vintage but may be the best Director's Cut to date.

Professional Ratings

Dense, rich and spicy, this offers a plush mouthful of blackberry, currant and cocoa flavors, with a long, creamy and open-textured finish.
  • 90
Medium to deep garnet colored with a hint of purple, the 2012 Director’s Cut Shiraz opens with aromas of warm mulberries, baked plums and blackberry preserves with hints of aniseed, sandalwood and baking spices. Full-bodied with plenty of mouth-filling blackberry and baking spice flavors it has a medium level of velvety tannins and a lively acid lift through the long finish. Drink it now to 2019.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”
