Winemaker Notes

Light garnet in the glass, this Pinot Noir carries a quiet allure. Aromas unfurl like a walk through a sun-dappled woodland; ripe raspberry fruit and brambles mingle with the earthy breath of warm dust, the herbal lift of bay leaf, and soft anise. The first sip is bright and lively, yet wrapped in a softness that gives it grace. Flavors of wild strawberry and delicate red berries layer seamlessly with savory spice. There’s a quiet complexity here, an interplay of light and shadow, that lingers in an elegant finish, leaving the memory of summer fruit and a whisper of earth.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
