The wild-berry and herb aromas, together with radical minerality and mouthwatering freshness paint a picture of a windswept, precipitous hillside vineyard, surrounded by cliffs and forest. Dark and dangerous at the very long and dangerously refreshing finish.

Vinified in stainless steel and large oak vats, the 2021 Altenbamberg Rotenberg GG offers a discreet, very fine and elegant nose of ripe fruits, crushed stones, wet earth and green tea aromas. Pure and crystalline on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, rather coolish and really cool-climate Riesling with remarkable finesse and savoriness and lots of lemon notes. There is nothing generous here; this an ascetic, linear and very elegant dry Riesling that will gain complexity with bottle age. Good structure and grip here.

First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
