Winemaker Notes

The 2022 vintage being warmer than 2021, shows more black fruits as its base. Black cherry, boysenberry and black fig aromas jump out of the glass. It is vibrant with nice perfume. The mouth is very smooth, rich silky tannins go on forever. Good tension in the mouth begs to have a second glass. The complexity is beyond its years. A great Alexander Valley Cabernet combined with a vintage that will age gracefully.

Dark fruit flavors and beautiful structure make it a lovely wine for food pairing. This wine’s elegance, acidity and spice notes complement grilled or roasted dishes, such as herb-crusted lamb, roasted duck or grilled pork loin. The wine’s earthiness even compliments vegetarian dishes, ratatouille or roasted root vegetables.

Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2022 Katherine Goldschmidt Vineyards 2022 deftly exhibits the elegance of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. This wine showcases aromas and flavors of active berries and hints of oak. Enjoy it with garlic and rosemary-accented roast chicken. (Tasted: March 28, 2025, San Francisco, CA)

Very ripe, warm and intense, with notes of plums, sweet berries, ground cloves, cedar and tar. Full-bodied with generous purple fruit character and creamy tannins. Plush and opulent.

  • 91

Plush and inviting, with lively and approachable notes of mulberry, cinnamon, cranberry, and red licorice. Light-hearted floral tones of peony and rose are tangled with garden herbs and black plum.

  • 90

The nose of this wine is dominated by dried cranberry, apricot and plum aromas, with sweet vanilla and caramel in the mix. The palate is saturated and decadent, with a massive framework of oak on display. Five or six years in the cellar should help this wine come into focus.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.
