    Winemaker Notes

Gnarly Head Chardonnay raises the bar for this classic varietal. This Chardonnay is a juicy, full-bodied wine that explodes with bright citrusy aromas of lemon zest, honeydew melon and just a hint of toasty oak. Big bold flavors of citrus and apple with a touch of vanilla ensure a perfect match with a range of cuisine, including chicken curry, grilled shrimp and spaghetti carbonara.

My first impression, as the truck pulled up to the eighty year old Zinfandel vineyards, was, "Wow, those vines sure have some gnarly heads!" Thus began a fifteen year love affair with the Old Vine Zinfandel.

The older Zin vineyards in California were planted before the use of modern trellising techniques and were "head pruned", meaning the shoots that eventually produce the grapes grow directly out of the head of the trunk. The resulting vines look more like a bush than the normally well-manicured rows of neatly trained along posts and wires – and they do have "Gnarly Heads".

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
