Winemaker Notes

Vibrant dark red with purple hues. Subtle yet expressive, black cherries, dried spice and licorice. This vintage of Bishop is amazingly expressive and approachable for a wine of such depth. It is both bright and complex and with convincingly silky texture. Flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate and multiple dried spices are supported by restrained tannin. Look for the classic calling card of palate length and persistence.

    This is beautifully curated, in a big and rich style. It’s full-bodied with round and creamy tannins that caress your palate. Lots of flavor and a creamy texture. It’s a bit of a throwback, but it’s hard to resist. Drink or hold.

    This 2020 Bishop Shiraz is a saturating and pure example of Barossa Shiraz, from a warm, compacted and low-yielding vintage. The wine in the glass is the very essence of Barossa, with red, earthy tannins, spicy/toasty oak and a fruit profile that spans red, purple and black. Really well done. Delicious.

Historically and presently the most important wine-producing region of Australia, the Barossa Valley is set in the Barossa zone of South Australia, where more than half of the country’s wine is made. Because the climate is very hot and dry, vineyard managers work diligently to ensure grapes reach the perfect levels of phenolic ripeness.

The intense heat is ideal for plush, bold reds, particularly Shiraz on its own or Rhône Blends. Often Shiraz and Cabernet partner up for plump and powerful reds.

While much less prevalent, light-skinned varieties such as Riesling, Viognier or Semillon produce vibrant Barossa Valley whites.

Most of Australia’s largest wine producers are based here and Shiraz plantings date back as far as the 1850s or before. Many of them are dry farmed and bush trained, still offering less than one ton per acre of inky, intense, purple juice.
