Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the west side of Bavarian Lion in Knights Valley, a terroir characterized by it’s cooler climate, gorgeous higher elevation vines, and gentle sloping hills. The majority of the grapes were selected from a flat area with limited terrain, producing more blue fruit flavors, while one quarter of the grapes were sourced from a steep knoll, bringing in a complementary touch of red spice fruit that makes for a more interesting wine overall.

This wine boasts alluring aromas of black cherry liqueur, complemented with hints of cedar, pencil lead and licorice that perfectly capture the mountain air and terrain of the vineyards in the glass. This is a finely structured wine that will reward the patient collector of fine Cabernet Sauvignon over the years.

Tasting Panel
Blackberry syrup liqueur is prominent on the aromatics, gearing you up for an intense mountain red. But once it hits the palate, the wine maintains structure, leaning towards an earthy, raspberry-licorice latte middle. Concentrated notes of cedar, bittersweet dark chocolate add to the dusty tannins. The wine continues to open up and will prove age worthy.
WE 90
Wine Enthusiast
This wine blends in Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah and Malbec, reining in the bold, tart red fruit to create a medium-bodied, softly textured palate with a leathery backbone. Clove notes are followed by a chocolate chaser on the lingering finish.

Gehricke Winery Video

"Growing up in Sonoma, we spent a lot of time exploring the local countryside: finding our way through neighboring vineyards owned by old friends and family. I remember the excitement of discovery and freedom while, as a young boy, I thoroughly studied our small town and its outskirts. I remember old dusty roads that led to forgotten vineyards and properties...Gehricke is a tribute to one such road.” - August Sebastiani, Proprietor

A small and picturesque valley separating Napa Valley on its south border and Alexander Valley to its north, Knights Valley excels in similar varieties as the two aforementioned appellations, namely red Bordeaux varieties and blends, as well as Sauvignon blanc. Originally established by Beringer Vineyards, today several outstanding producers claim acreage here. The circadian cooling effects of the nearby Pacific Ocean create a nighttime respite for vineyards during the hot growing season.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
