    Winemaker Notes

    Overtones of black-cherry, plum, and sweet oak. Brilliant purple hue. A rich entry leads to a full-bodied palate. A blend of Zinfandel grapes from the benchlands of Mendocino County. The vines range from 21 to 37 years of age. Excellent with Italian food Our emphasis on natural, organic and Biodynamic® methods carries over from the vineyard to the winery. We encourage clean, vigorous fermentation, using the finest obtainable yeast derived from European strains. Occasionally, a wine is allowed to ferment on its own wild yeast. We do not add acids to our wines. We rely on proper timing of the harvest to achieve a good acid/sugar balance. All our wines are allowed to complete malo-lactic fermentation, and are inoculated during primary fermentation with the best malo-lactic strains. Our goal is to produce wines that resist spoilage without preservatives by way of picking clean fruit with sufficient natural acidity and good pH. Vigorous yeast starters get fermentation off to a quick, clean start and jacketed stainless steel tanks provide temperature control. We do not add sorbates, sulfur dioxide solutions, nor sulfur salts to our wines before or after fermentation. As a result our no-sulfites-added wines have a clean, delicate flavor. (Visit our No Sulfites Added page to learn more). Before use, all equipment is sterilized with steam or extremely hot water, with great care taken to prevent air contact. Since we add no preservatives, we recommend extended storage of our white wines at 50'F or less. However, the red wines may be treated as any other fine red wine and should be aged at 52'- 55' F.

    We are a third-generation family-owned and operated winery located at the pristine headwaters of the Russian River in Redwood Valley, Mendocino County, California. At Frey Vineyards we combine the best of modern and traditional winemaking methods to showcase distinctive varietal flavors. Through minimal manipulation in the cellar, we allow the wines to express the authentic character of our soils and climate. For over three decades we have been vanguards in crafting wine without added sulfites, a synthetic preservative added to most other wines (even wines made with organically grown grapes!) that can cause adverse allergic reactions in some people. Our organic and Biodynamic farming methods encourage care for the soil, groundwater, and wildlife, promoting rich biodiversity in the vineyard. Ninety percent of our land is held as unspoiled natural habitat with a diverse mix of native plants and animals. As stewards of the land, we emphasize producing organic and Biodynamic wine of the highest quality while caring for planet and palate alike.

    North Coast

    Encompassing the grape-growing regions located north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, and Solano. Napa and Sonoma get all of the attention, but there are a few other counties producing great wine in Northern California. Two notable examples are Mendocino and Lake County, the northernmost winegrowing regions in the state. These AVAs are very different, both from their neighbors to the south and from one another.

    Mendocino benefits from the cooling fog of the Pacific Ocean and is able to successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. There is a significant focus here on organic viticulture. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc are the dominant varieties. Both regions are excellent sources of high-quality but affordable California wines in a wide range of styles.

    Unapologetically powerful, heady, and fruit-forward, Zinfandel is often thought of as a truly Californian grape, though in fact it is anything but. This variety has followed an intriguing trajectory to reach its adoptive home, beginning, surprisingly, in Croatia. Originally known as Tribidrag, it first made its way to southern Italy where it became known as Primitivo. From there it eventually migrated to what is now unarguably its most successful outpost, in California, and has thrived throughout the state. Of course, this is also the grape of White Zinfandel, a sweet pink wine that enjoyed great popularity in the 1980s and 90s. Though White Zin still has a significant following, today the variety is increasingly associated with the red version.

    In the Glass

    Zinfandel commonly features a bold, plush texture and notes of dark plum, blackberry, sweet spice, black pepper, dark chocolate, leather, and licorice, and can often be described as “jammy” and a little bit sweet. Very ripe examples may express a hint of dried fruit like raisin, fig, or prune. Despite its significant alcohol and weight, Zinfandel has very smooth, gentle tannins.

    Perfect Pairings

    Zinfandel is a powerfully flavored wine, mingling happily with bold food like brisket, lamb shanks, pork ribs, or anything barbecued. If care is taken with regards to alcohol levels, Zinfandel’s hint of sweetness can work well with milder Indian-spiced dishes like lamb curry.

    Sommelier Secret

    Thanks to its popularity both for home winemaking and as communion wine, many Zinfandel vines were able to survive prohibition, leading to the abundance of "old vine" Zinfandels. These low-yielding vines tend to produce wine that is concentrated, complex, and elegant.
