Winemaker Notes

A brilliant dark purple color unfolds into flavors of raspberry, blueberry and black cherry. Cassis, vanilla, and roasted coffee add to the intensity of the wine. Opulent and generous, it delivers elegant tannin and a long lingering finish.

COMMENTARY: There used to be an active group called, "P.S., I love you." I haven't heard much from them for a while. This trade group promoted the joys of Petite Sirah, and it was pretty good at doing that. Over the years, I have enjoyed this grape variety. The 2015 French Bar Petite Sirah is a solid example of its immediate drinkability. TASTING NOTES: This wine is ripe and smooth on the palate. Its aromas and flavors of black fruits and vanilla, from its oak aging, should pair it well with grilled pork chops. (Tasted: July 2, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

French Bar, California
French Bar Wines is owned and operated by the Coleman family. This land and this business are in our blood. Our grandfather taught us to grow grapes in a sustainable manner. We learned early to appreciate the fruits of our own labor, especially when those fruits can be savored for years to come. After half a lifetime of experiences, we’ve come together, back where it began for us. Each sibling brings different talents to the table: winemaking, farming, business. Together we’re sharing the passion and values we grew up learning and building something that can be appreciated for generations to come. French Bar wine are estate grown and sustainably farmed on our family ranch in the Sierra Foothills. The growing conditions here are unique, and in many ways ideal for the varietals we produce. Sitting above the fertile valley, our shallow, gravelly soil forces the vines to struggle, and the cooler, windier climate enables us to control growth and vigor. As our pioneer predecessors learned, this is a challenging landscape to farm, but it rewards your effort with beautiful, expressive fruit. We take a minimalist approach to winemaking. It’s our aim to simply nurture that fruit through the process, enabling it to become the fullest expression of the place and the seasons that produced it.

California is a winemaking colossus; by itself it is the fourth largest producer in the world. Red wine accounts for 56% of the total by volume, and red grapes 63% of total acres planted. In addition, a number of California red wines are heralded as being among the most prestigious and sought-after wines in the world.

While the state’s incredibly diverse geography, soils and microclimates allow for a wide array of styles, the key factor unifying California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season. This leads to well-developed fruit marked both by impressive ripeness and balancing acidity.

The state’s most famous red wine region, of course, is Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon reigns as king. But California boasts a wealth of other impressive appellations. The much larger and climatically varied Sonoma County also produces world class California Cabernet, along with wonderful examples of California Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.

Fine versions of Cabernet and Zinfandel hail from Paso Robles as well, which is also gaining fame with Rhone varietals like Syrah and Grenache. As for Pinot Noir, terrific examples can be found from AVA’s such as Anderson Valley, Carneros, Santa Lucia Highlands and Sta. Rita Hills. Wineries in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties are making wonderful Syrahs, and the Sierra Foothill appellations are proving to be an experimental hotbed, with Italian and Spanish varietals employed to great effect.

This of course is a mere sketch. The subject of California red wine is as deep and broad as an ocean, and absolutely a joy to explore!
