Winemaker Notes

Deep ruby red color with fine polish and brightness. This is a quite powerfully aromatic wine, perhaps more so at this stage of development than most of the previous vintages. There is a very fine tobacco/cedar note mixed with red berries and cassis which reminds me of aromas typical of young Bordeaux.

Flavors literally explode with lively fruit qualities. Licorice, cassis and fine leather are evident up front with deeper berries and toasty oak following. Tannins are soft and certainly evident yet the overwhelming character is of intense fruit. The length of aftertaste is impressively long with fruit and spicy Bordelaise-like flavors indicating good potential for complex bottle bouquet development, '97 is indeed a very classic vintage.

Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petite Verdot, 8% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc

Critical Acclaim

RP 90
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon is a beauty. One of Ric Forman's classics, it boasts a dark ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, dried herbs, cedar, blackberries, and minerals. This medium to full-bodied Cabernet exhibits firm tannin in the finish, in addition to excellent sweet fruit, and a subtle, nuanced personality.
WS 90
Wine Spectator
Supple and concentrated, with tight currant, mint, sage and cedar. Gains depth and nuance, with a complex aftertaste.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
